Urban Stimuli: Where Supply Chain Meets Circular Economy

Project details

Programme
Cluster RC18
Year 1

Urban Stimuli investigates the urban transformation in the coffee bean belt and the role of Starbucks corporation in transforming vast areas of rainforest in the tropics. The project proposes a vertical farm in Manhattan, New York, dedicated to producing and distributing coffee. The students explore using MidJourney as a participatory tool to engage the public in producing a digital landscape that brings together the rainforest existence and the coffee into the project.

Arabica coffee grows best in tropical regions between the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn. Starbucks sources coffee from 30 of the 51 coffee-growing nations worldwide through its fair trade C.A.F.E. practice.

Arabica coffee grows best in temperatures between 20-24°C, but growth suffers above 30°C or below 15°C due to halted photosynthesis and frost susceptibility.

Coffee thrives with 60-90 inches of evenly distributed annual rainfall. Consistent rainfall is essential to prevent smaller, underdeveloped beans and low yields.

Manhattan's population is growing while other boroughs decline. Traffic time is decreasing despite this. This strain calls for rethinking city boundaries. Public activities like housing, parks, and restaurants coexist with the harbour function.

The greenhouse design started with site analysis and evolved through structural grid iterations, a pedestrian network, and zoning optimisation using an evolutionary algorithm. Pix2Pix machine learning aided in efficient factory zone design.

The design process evolves in three phases. Starbucks currently has 32,000 stores and aims to reach 55,000 globally by 2030, a 70% increase to meet future coffee demand. The phased strategy aligns with production needs over time.

The factory zone comprises six functional areas: cleaning, sorting, wet processing, milling, storage, packing, and recycling. A floor plan generator (space syntax algorithm) produces 50 plans, used as input for the machine learning algorithm.

The master plan proposal extends along the Hudson River shoreline, seamlessly blending with the existing landscape and offering a real-time view of the design. It considers site circulation in relation to the surrounding context.

ETFE (Ethylene tetrafluoroethylene) is the primary façade material of a coffee plantation in an urban setting using hydroponic vertical farming. Harvested coffee beans are processed in the factory zone below the greenhouse units.

The project employs Midjourney as a participatory tool, using digital screens on the façade system to redefine the connection between the city and the hinterland. Users are engaged in creating an interactive spatial experience within the design.
